In the year of 1865, the White House in Nashville, Tennessee was the temporary home of President Abraham Lincoln as he attempted to flee from Confederate forces. The president's cabinet, including Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and Attorney General Thomas Jeffersons, moved into the nearby Cumberland mansion for a few weeks before moving back to the White House on April 15th. The Nashville district attorney general, John Brewer, served as mayor from 1865 to 1867. The first African American Mayor in Tennessee was James A. Barnett who served from 1868-1869. In 1870–71 Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected Mayor and held office until his death in 1945. From 1901 to 1912 Julius Rosenwald served as Mayor with distinction; during this time period there were also three other black mayors: James Mott (1911), Charles Wolk (1912), and Addison Parks (1913). The original White House had been built by Federalist politician and Governor of Tennessee Richard Butler in 1785–86 on land donated by George Rogers Clark. It burned down in 1814 while being used as an arsenal under Presidents James Kelloway and Andrew Jackson and was rebuilt by Butler using plans provided by surveyor Nicholas-Jacques Conte de la Garde Howe. The current structure was completed in 1817 by architect Robert Patterson after consultation with Howe about a new design for Washington D.C.. During World War II, when Nashville became known as "the air capital of the world", much activity took place at Elmendorf Air Force Base which is located just south of downtown across Interstate 24 from the White House complex on Fifth Avenue . Afterward Elmendorf became an industrial park full of Boeing plants, Lockheed Martin plants, ATK plants,, Ennis explosives plant,, Dow Chemical plants,, Ford Motor Company plants,, etc., making it one of America's most diverse metropolitan areas

The White House in Tennessee is a Historic British Colonial-era structure located on the grounds of the United States Capitol in Nashville, Tennessee. It was built as the first meeting place for the Tennessee Supreme Court and served as such from 1811 to 1818. The building has been used by both the U.S. president and his cabinet since its construction. The White House was designed by James K. Polk, who also designed many other important buildings in Nashville including State Capitol, Cumberland Courthouse, First Baptist Church, and Salvation Army Building. The cornerstone of the White House was laid on July 4, 1811 by President James K. Polk and future Vice President Andrew Johnson after they were elected to office that year as part of a coalition government made up of Democrats and Federalists. The original structure consisted of two stories with a wings extending east–west across what is now Constitution Avenue between Fifth Street Sq.–the current location of Government Center–and Sixth Street Sq.–today’s site of Independence Hall (see photo). Its first occupant was James “Butch” Caviness who became justice of the peace for Madison County in 1816 before moving to Memphis to become mayor under Jackson during his time as governor from 1827 to 1830; he later returned to Nashville as mayor from 1840 until his death in 1850. In 1818, General David Barham relieved Commodore John Rodgers when Rodgers attempted unsuccessfully to blockade New Orleans following its capture by French forces at Mobile Bay; Caviness then served briefly as military governor before being replaced by Governor Isaac Shelby within days atembassy walls near downtown after which Caviness moved into the new White House until he resigned due to ill health on October 2nd following a dinner hosted by Emperor Napoleon I at which Caviness participated along with other dignitaries including Presidents James Buchanan and Franklin Pierce (see photo). In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early advanced through Union lines while anchored off Fort Donelson in Alabama; Early's force included 400 men under Major General Averil Harbison while Rear Admiral Amos Epps led an effort ashore supported by gunfire from HMS Ironsides which had arrived earlier that day Carteret called upon all Americans inside Fort Donelson "to put your heads together and see if any way can be got round this difficulty" but no response was forthcoming according to one account On October 12th Rear Admiral Harbison sent orders ashore ordering Southbound vessels backed up against batteries whereupon Lieutenant Colonel John Pemberton ordered all hands back aboard ship wearing masks so that no grapeshot could hit them Commodore Alexander Cochrane responded that fortifications should not be taken lightly—"This gives us time enough", he told Pemberton) As night fell bombardment increased with ships firing grape shot directly into fortifications accompanied by shore artillery There seemed little hope Shorty ordered all hands back onto ship again Heading out towards river barge Yeomen boarded boat & began pulling people over After dark exhausted yeomen finally gave up & left boat Behind enemy lines about 8 miles away A totalOf 122 Americans lost their lives& Over 1400 wounded or missing
