Union City is a city in Union County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. According to the 2009 census, it has a population of 17,971. The first scopes were built in Union City by two men from boats on Cumberland River in 1836. In 1843 Union City had one of the first public schools when it opened at 217 N Main Street. The city's post office was established in 1854 and became known as Union City (post office) because most mail was sent through Chattanooga until 1865 when Memphis took over that function. In 1861 Confederate General JF Jackson's army invaded Union City and burned most of it to the ground before retreating back into Tennessee without taking any prisoners or spoils. Union City experienced another war-time destruction in 1865 when Confederate general John Bell Hood's army burned down much of downtown including four hotels which housed 1,500 civilians and their families. It wasn't until 1907 that a new Carnegie library was built on South Main Street after plans were drawn up by local resident James Cheadle and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The current library building was opened in 1966. In 1938 an all-steel shipping container called "The Ark" became the world's largest wooden ship ever built when she sailed from Union City to San Francisco with 539 passengers and crew

The first settler in what would become Union City was John McConnell who arrived in 1853 with his family from Edinburgh, Scotland. McConnell built a log cabin on land he owned near present day downtown Union City. He married Anna Seward and they had six children: John (1854-1929), Jane (1858-1959), Allan (1860-1945), Murdoch (1862-1943), Catharine (1864-1941) and Hugh Roe McKenzie (1866-1950). In 1875, settlers James MacLaren and Archibald Forbes arrived from Canada with their families and started farmsteading about three miles west of McConnell’s cabin on the north side ofthe Cumberland River . When word spread that there were fertile acres available south of Nashville for cultivation near what are now known as Highland Park Boulevard South and Vine Street Southwest , they decided to move there too . In 1915, UnionCity became an incorporated city with a population of 25K people However; by the late 1990s it had regained some growth The first post office in what would become Union City opened on November 14th 1865 under assumed name “Greeneville” after Confederate General Robert Ewell Greeneburg . On July 1st 1870, it changed its name to “Union Station” after The Nashville Tennessean published an editorial urging residents to unite against Sherman’s invading army . On December 10th 1870 US Postmaster General Edwin Mudgett announced plans for railroads connecting Memphis through Johnsonburg Junction eastward into Chattanooga so that goods could be transported directly from those factories located there without having to go through Louisville or Atlanta On January 5th 1872 Stonington Daily News reporter A C O Hickey wrote about how “a lively scene met our eyes as we walked down Main street towards Wilson's Hotel – one might suppose that during these days all business transactions were transacted at this fashionable establishment which has since been destroyed by fire ; but looking around us we saw evidence that this theory is not correct ; for although quite lately walls have been knocked down within sixty feet of Wilson's door numerous packagesoras lettersboxesresidencecardsand other effects lay scattered among broken bricks along every footpath leading into or outofWilson's premises - most curiously enough all these evidences occurred while Mr Wilsons partner resided inside his own building !” Since Railroads did not exist at this time Railroad promoters William Dudley Peck & Jacob Brown purchased Wilson’s Hotel property adjoining Main Street for $1 million dollars on February 6th 1872 just four weeks after debuting their plan for commuter rail service between Chattanooga/Johnsonburg Junction via Lima Road Bridge over Little Red River
