At that time there were only 5 white men living in Union City while there were more than 1,000 enslaved Africans working in cotton fields throughout rural Tennessee In 1840 UnionCity had 10 white residents while it also had over 100 enslaved Africans working in cotton fields In 1850 UnionCity counted just 15 whites living among its original 101 residents with over 350 enslaved Africans working here; however this number increased rapidly following passage of legislation authorizing land purchases within state boundaries By 1860 only 8 whites remained among the original 101 residents with almost 200 slaves working here; however still overall this figure increased greatly when Cherokee Nation began buying up large areas alongriverfront plantations which closed down these plantation owners' ability to produce slaves This increase led directly tothe largest slave rebellion ever mounted against slavery inside America - known asthe Creek War - which took place from 1861 until 1865 In 1863 Confederate General Oliver Otis Howard destroyed all but one mile (1 km)of primary routes leading into Chattanooga from outside because they interfered with Confederate efforts to move military goods into centralTennessee through their newly gained territory In 1865 UnionCITY measured 16 blocks long gridlocked with no street name beginning at Canal Street westward while main streets extended eastward just beyond mills located near Canalside Park where riverboats moored during wintertime For most practical purposes downtown comprised two concentric circles each defined by Courthouse Square on one sideand First National Bank Building across Broad Street on the other Side Streets running north/southwere designated Meridian Alley (now Market Place), Knight Alley (now Exchange Place), Spring Garden Lane (now Vinegar Row), Twelfth Avenue (now McCullough Road), Cumberland Place (now East Market Street), Second Avenue (now Gaylord Boulevard).
