The Town of Union City, Tennessee was a small town in the county of Davidson, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. There were two settlements in what is now Union City:Union Landing and Beech Grove. Union Landing was founded by James Robertson in 1792 when he moved his family from Scotland to what is now Union City. He built a log cabin on the present site of the Alamo Theatre and named it after his birthplace in Scotland - Edinburgh. Beech Grove was established by John Beech in 1811 as a small farming community east of Union City on high ground overlooking the confluence ofriver Letcher and river Cumberland. He named his plantation "Beech Grove" after one of his trees, beech being an early word for “barn” or “house” in England. In 1827, Union City became an important stop on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad line which linked downtown Nashville with southern Chattanooga and other parts of Tennessee. The railroad stopped at Beech Grove so passengers could purchase goods they would need to bring home with them such as food, livestock, tools and furniture before continuing their journey northward.
