Union City is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by settlers in 1836 and named for General James K. Polk, who had been elected president that year. The first post office in Union City was established in 1837. The community grew rapidly during the 1840s as cotton plantations were developed nearby and many people moved to Union City from other parts of Hardin County. The first school was built in Union City in 1845 and there were three churches within two years. A flour mill was built near the intersection of US31 and SR 925 in 1850; it became one of the largest mills in Hardin County and produced flour until it closed its doors in 1979. In 1860, a wagon road linking Jonesborough with Nashville was completed; this led to increased traffic to the city and helped spur development around Union City such as an electric power plant, a water tower, and an industrial park which today remains a popular tourist destination. In 1870, Union City became one of five towns incorporated within Knoxville; it continued to grow rapidly during Reconstruction period when many people came to work on new projects such as construction of schools and hospitals throughout the area. For most of the 20th century, Union City remained largely unaffected by changing social or economic conditions outside of Knoxville; however, recent gentrification has started to change this trend with more affluent residents moving into downtown areas while smaller businesses have been displaced onto residential streets away from shopping centers or parks
