Union City, Tennessee is home to one of the oldest optical accessory stores in America. This store was founded in 1876 by Dr. John Witherspoon and his wife, Mrs. Eliza Blythe Witherspoon. The store was located on Market Street in Union City and operated until 1925. The original Optical Shopkeepers Association (OSHA) was formed in 1925 to protect optical workers from dangerous working conditions and possible accidents. OSHA organized a series of safety meetings throughout the United States to discuss potential solutions to problems with optical equipment and employees. In 1933, OSHA created the first rules governing the use of lights for industrial purposes. These regulations were designed to reduce accidents and injuries among employees using optical equipment for work tasks that required close attention or delicate manipulation. In 1937, Dr. John Witherspoon passed away and his widow, Mrs. Eliza Blythe Witherspoon took over management of the store as sole owner-operator. With her ownership, the OSA began making significant changes to its policies and practices regarding optics education, training, safety precautions, health insurance coverage, etc., which would continue into the future under her guidance and supervision! Mrs. Blythe Witherspoon retired from management of the store in 1978 but continued to operate it as an occasional tourist attraction until 1996 when it closed its doors permanently due to declining sales opportunities! Today only a few photos remain of what must have been a quite unique UE business back then!

The city was founded on December 12, 1811 by Colonel John Sevier as a fortification against Native American raids during the Indian Removal War. The first post office in Union City opened in 1814. On September 25, 1870, Union City became an incorporated town when it annexed the village of Pigeon Forge from unincorporated Knox County. In 1886, Mayor J.B. "Buddy" Bigham named one of his six children after then-Governor William Hance of Arkansas who had helped finance and build Pigeon Forge Dam (now known as Stewart-Hance Dam). When President Grover Cleveland visited Union City on July 4, 1886 for a campaign rally he called "A Great Day in America," he donated $500 to Mayor Bigham's son Buddy to help fund a new Public Library which would be built adjacent to Pigeon Forge Park.. In 1912 Union City voters approved annexation into Chattanooga by voting 54% in favor and 44% against a resolution opposing annexation; however this vote did not become effective until 1913 when Chattanooga adopted an ordinance that caused all annexations into their city be effective immediately upon passage by both municipal councils - something which never happened with Union City because they didn't have an ordinance yet! After World War II ended and most industries left or closed down throughout Tennessee due to competition from elsewhere in the country, more than 60 small businesses were located within two blocks of downtownUnionCity before they went out of business over time due to low tax rates combined with lack of industry/business diversity outside of Chattanooga making it difficult for them to compete against larger businesses that had moved away during that time period...Today few if any businesses remain within two blocks of downtownUnionCity other than restaurants serving up local cuisine like Grits & Grains BBQ or Chinese takeout served up by locals such as Panda Express & Wok Noodle House among others
