Union City, Tennessee was a small town in Union County, Tennessee until the late 1800s. At one time it was home to over 20,000 people and had a thriving industry of holster manufacturing. The town’s decline began in the early 20th century as gun-related crime increased in nearby Memphis. However, through cooperation with neighboring towns and counties, Union City managed to continue to thrive until the early 1960s when it too went into decline due to changing demographics and economic conditions. Today, the only evidence of the once large city remains its namesake shopping district along Broadway Street between Spring Mountain Road and Interstate 24. The area now known as Union City was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. In 1792 they were forced from their homes by British troops under General James Wilkinson during the French and Indian War. The name “Union” came from an English word meaning both “union” (a gathering together) and “township” (a community). In 1796 John Sevier donated land for a courthouse and jail on what is now Fourth Street nearpresent day Main Street in Union City limits. By 1800 most of the town had been built up around this center with some smaller dwellings scattered throughout the rural area surrounding it. In 1814 Captain William Tullahoma led a force of Creek Indians against General Andrew Jackson at Horseshoe Bend outside present day Lebanon, Tennessee; although many Indians were killed or captured Jackson never lost his reputation as an invincible general despite this defeat. After Jackson's victory over Tecumseh at New Madrid he ordered Major James Winchester to march on Union City with 10 cannons while 500 men surrounded Winchester's column; but within minutesancoosing fire from Confederate sharpshooters Winchester took refuge inside his cannon at Second Avenue Bridge across Spring River which destroyed part of his brigade including six officers including himself before being evacuationed back into Chattanooga without loss or damage to any unit except for one man wounded who later died from his wound).
