Union City, Tennessee is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 18,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The city was founded in 1867 by Scots-Irish settlers and named for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1930 it became the home of General Motors Corporation's new research and development center for heavy trucks and buses. Union City was an important transportation hub during the early days of Chattanooga and its predecessor cities. Union City served as a transportation terminus for the first railway to reach Chattanooga from Nashville: the Cumberland Railroad arrived in 1871. Union City also functioned as a junction point on several other railways before they reached Chattanooga proper; these include the Western Carolina Railway (1889), via Hillsboro; the Memphis & Nashville Railroad (1893), via West Point; and the Dalton Street Railway (1915), which connected Union City with downtown Chattanooga. The heyday of Union City trucking began when GM moved its research center there from Flint, Michigan in 1930. At that time, GM was America's largest truck manufacturer with over 100 factories across America employing more than 150,000 people.
