The history of Union City goes back to 1887 when settlers from East Tennessee moved into what is now Williamson County for economic reasons after the Civil War had ended. They named their new town Union City because they were all members of one union - citizens of Chattanooga who had lost their homes in that war. By 1907, however, there were already other towns established in this area such as Knoxville with similar names (such as Smyrna), so Union City slowly gained its current name due to its location alone rather than any connection with its namesake city in Tennessee. In 1912, during World War I, Union City became an important munitions production center because it produced shells for both sides of the conflict. The plant closed down following World War II but reopened again in 1951 as a paper mill before closing again in 1984. Today Union City remains an important cultural and business center within Williamson County thanks to its rich history and diverse demographics which include many professionals or managers from industries such as healthcare/hospitality/technology/manufacturing etc..
