In 1831, Rutherford Burch bought 5 acres of land from Aitken for $150 dollars. Burch built a house on this land and named it "Buch's Grove." He also started a grocery store on Second Street which later became known as "Buch's Drug & Grocery." Over time, Buch's Drug & Grocery grew into one of the largest general stores in eastern Tennessee with over 100 employees! In 1892, George Fenton opened his own general store on Third Avenue which became known as "Fenton's". In 1907-08, Fenton added another building to his store which became known as the "Elks Hall". In 1931-32 (the early years of World War II), Union City saw its most significant economic development when General Motors began manufacturing cars there under their new plant called GMC Enterprises Incorporated (later renamed Chrysler). This factory produced some 350 jobs during its heyday! During World War II (1941-1945), many people from Union City served in our military including two members of Congress: William Alexander “Bill” Knox (D) and Howell Rainey “Howell” Hines (R). During these years many families came together to raise money for war efforts including donations to local food banks and ambulance service groups like Red Cross Society America PACS!). In 1946-47 Jimmy Dean opened up a restaurant called Jimmy Dean's Place off Main Street which quickly become one of the most popular restaurants east of Interstate 40! Finally after more than 50 years since opening day both Elks Halls closed their doors due to lack of customers but not before they had been home to many happy memories by all involved!
