Union City is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The Covered Bridge and Iron Works are located in Union City. Union City was laid out by Andrew Jackson on December 14, 1801 as a town in Knox County. It was named after the United States branch of the House of Burgesses that met there to discuss national issues during the first year of his presidency. The original settlers were farmers and loggers who came from Kentucky and adjacent states looking for land to settle. They built log cabins which served as their homes until they could buy more permanent buildings. In 1819, Union City became a city with a charter from the Tennessee legislature. The growth of Union City started slowly but steadily over time due to its strategic location between Nashville and Chattanooga on the Cumberland River and its accessibility by wagon road and railroads. By 1890, Union City had developed into an important transportation hub for eastern Tennessee with six passenger trains running daily through it to Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, Johnson City and points beyond. A major factor behind this growth was railroad construction which began in 1865 under General George McClellan as part of his plan to open up western Tennessee lands to homesteaders via purchase or donation by railroads; these purchases were necessary because Congress had prohibited any form of public land acquisition without Congressional consent since antebellum times when such acquisitions were seen as unconstitutional gifts from Mexico to America’s European allies (the “Mexico Land War”). The result was devastation along much of what is now EasternTennessee due to extensive track-building that took place concurrently with little regard for local communities – towns such as Prestonsburg (now JohnsonCity), Tellico Plains (now Lebanon), Crossingsville (now Dyersburg) – whose residents would have been effected directly or indirectly by new railroad tracks near their homes. In 1902–03 Union City enjoyed one of its most significant periods when its citizens played a pivotal role in helping create both statehood for Tennessee and passage of laws establishing it including important measures regarding education reform including creating rules governing teacher certification qualifications; these measures helped stimulate economic development within the town while also ensuring that all children received an elementary level education regardless of family income or background . In 1907–08 Mayor Hargrave founded what would become known as "The Hargrave Foundation" which provided scholarshipships program exclusively for high school seniors from economically disadvantaged families in order to improve their academic ability while engaging in community service projects throughout hard-pressed areas across central Appalachia . For many years this program functioned like an indentured servitude system whereby young men spent four years doing manual labor oniverary hours before being given access to college tuition assistance upon graduation thereby enabling them not onlyto enter good-paying jobs but also afford some level of living apart from their families – something that still exists today among Appalachian students attending university outside urban areas across North America

In that year, Union City became the capital of Tennessee Territory. As part of this territory, Union City served as the seat of government for much of eastern Tennessee. The first United States courthouse in Union City was built in 1824. The town continued to grow in population and stature until it reached its peak around 1830-1831. By then, however, Union City had become largely abandoned due to the lack of opportunities for growth or commerce within its boundaries. In 1835, Union City was reincorporated as a city under the administration of Tennessee General Assemblywoman Eliza Hawkins Bartlett. At this time, Union City began to grow again as an important center for business and culture within eastern Tennessee; it also became one of the most vibrant cities in America at this time. By 1860, however, Union CITY had declined significantly in population and stature; by comparison, Memphis had increased significantly in population since 1840 while still remaining an important cultural center throughout much of southern Alabama and northern Georgia. In 1861, following Confederate military successes across much of north Louisiana and central Texas (including what is now Houston), Memphis emerged as the new primary commercial center for all southeastern Tennessee; Union CITY consequently lost its status as a major financial and cultural center within eastern Tennessee.)
