In 1865, Union City passed through a period of transformation thanks to efforts spearheaded by Mayor Samuel Jarratt Jr., who aimed to create an urban center for commerce and entertainment around what would then be known as "the newninth Ward." These endeavors led to increased traffic onto Main Street from surrounding neighborhoods as well as new buildings being erected throughout downtown including several theaters (the most famous being Shakespeare's Globe), banks (including First National Bank), hotels (most notably Brown's Hotel), restaurants (including Gilded Cage) and a number of stores such as Jarratt's Hardware & Home Supply Co.. By 1870, Union City had reached its peak both economically and socially; however, violence against African Americans began increasing during this time period culminating with one such incident in 1871 when three black men were killed by white supremacists while working at a cotton gin near downtown. This event created significant public outcry which helped spur government action against racism throughout Tennessee during this era. After decades of decline caused by various factors - primarily political division among Tennesseans -Union City experienced another resurgence beginning around 2000 when community organizers spearheaded an aggressive revitalization campaign that focused on creating parks and pedestrian malls along Main Street as well as developing new housing stock including condos/condominiums/apts./homes “ atop” old cotton warehouses/factories – providing quality affordable housing without sacrificing parking or livability . In 2013-2014 there was another major revitalization campaign blitzkrieging through town hall meetings starting 6pm every day leading up until 4am resulting inmarketplace development totaling over 100 units wound down 5 months later still no answer about why any progress has been made ..
