In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union City sided with Confederate forces against United States forces under Ulysses S Grant; three members of its community were killed as a result. After the war ended in 1865, many Union City residents moved away or left for states where slavery still existed; some returned years later to start several successful businesses there such as grocery store and millinery shopkeepers (the latter becoming known as "Queen's Mill"). After Reconstruction ended in 1865 – which saw great violence throughout much of America following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation – most black Americans retreated back into Deep South slave states such as Alabama or Mississippi while white Southern farmers began to colonize what remained of East Tennessee settlements such as UnionCity (known then simply as "Union"). By 1870 about 60% of all men living in hard-hit Appalachian areas worked on plantations outside of New Orleans; only 5% of men working on plantations within New Orleans lived within 500 miles (800 km) of their workplace - almost all those workers were black! In 1865, when Hardin County was organized into districts within Tennessee based on formality prescribed by state legislators at an election held that year, Union City became part of District #1 which included all but the most sparsely populated portions of Hardin County including Knoxville proper and much of what is now Wilson county.
