Tullahoma is an unincorporated community in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 547 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River just east of the county line with Kentucky. The Cherokee people first settlers in what is now Tullahoma were members of the Mingo tribe and they arrived around 1790. A few years later, a group from Kentucky also settled here and called themselves Cherokee because they were descended from British military officers who had fought against the Creek nation during the American Revolution. In 1820, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near Tullahoma and soon after development began throughout what is now Hardin County. By 1830, there were about 100 residents in Tullahoma according to one source; by 1840 there were over 1,000 residents. A post office was established at Tullahoma in 1837; it remained in operation until 1861. In 1860, part of Hardin County becameKnoxville Township which included most of what is now Tullahoma; this change did not occur until 1921 when Knoxville Township was split into two counties - Hardin and Marshall Counties - as part of a territorial reversion under US federal law following Tennessee's admission to the Union as a state. As coal mining increased along with population growth throughout much of northern America during the 19th century, social unrest increasingly boiled over into violence across racial lines in central Appalachia due to Horace Greeley's " Progressivism" movement that promoted industrialization and modernization while seeking less integration between whites and black Americans than existed among most other sections of America at that time. This transformation led directly to bloody uprisings against white supremacy both within Appalachian society as well as outside it starting around 1865 throughout much of North America including southern Alabama where similar conflicts erupted between freed slaves insurrectionists known as Black Panthers (and their white allies) versus white supremacists referred to variously as Ku Klux Klan (KKK), Nazi skinheads or even “Caucasian Republicans” (i-e., businessmen interested primarily in advancing economic interests within newly formed Southwestern states). Eventually these conflicts would become intertwined with larger civil rights movements culminating finally with African Americans gaining full citizenship rights nationwide following passage of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 which outlawed discrimination on account of race by all levels governmental entities irrespective of location or status quo ante such initiatives being opposed by numerous business interests especially those controlled by Confederate veterans/businessmen who profited handsomely from segregated transportation systems still extant postwar inside Southern West Virginia despite official declarations that such areas should be open seasonally for all races no matter how deeply seated historical resentments may have been) . However, during World War I and II, the town's infrastructure deteriorated as war production took precedence over local needs. In 1949, Tullahoma became an incorporated municipality when it amalgamated with neighboring towns of Decatur and Pulaski. In recent years, Tullahoma has seen a resurgence in cultural activity due to its proximity to Nashville and its status as a historical center for the Appalachian Mountains region. The city is home to several museums including the Davidson County Archives which houses more than 1 million items dating back to 1796. Additionally, there are several small businesses located throughout downtown that contribute toTullahomas vibrant culture scene.
