Tullahoma, Tennessee is a town in Trimble County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The name Tullahoma comes from the Choctaw word "tuh-kuh-lom" meaning "place of many fires." It was first settled by Scots-Irish Presbyterians in 1799 and named after Colonel John Tullahoma (1747–1827), an officer in the U.S. Army who fought in the American Revolution and during the Mexican War. The town's first store was built on what is now USRoute 12 north of downtown in 1808. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson ordered General Floyd to march on Nashville to capture supplies for his army before he wintered there. When General Floyd reached Tullahoma he found that it had been vacated by its original inhabitants because of Indian raids into their territory. A new community called Knoxville had been founded nearby and so Knoxville became the capital of Tennessee when Tennessee became a state in 1796. In 1830, Judge John Crouch organized a Methodist church here and named it First Baptist Church because he wanted it to be separate from First Presbyterian Church which still exists today as part of Germantown Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church south of town on Old Hickory Boulevard near Interstate 24/US Route 31A east of downtown. Reverend James Auld preached there until his death in 1853 while also serving as pastor at Second Baptist Church across denominations west side Main Street from where Third Baptist now stands across denominations just east of I-24 exit 11A between Addison Avenue North and South Streets). After Reverend Auld's death, Second Baptist took over preaching services for First Baptist until 1861 when First Baptist again became the exclusive preacher for all three churches combined under one roof with First Baptist Chapel becoming known as simply “First” Chapel until 1975 when both Chalices were sold to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School adjacent to Third Avenue South Garage on East Main Street between Addison Avenue North and South Streets).
