Tullahoma, Tennessee is home to the oldest continuously operating rifle and shotgun shooting range in the United States. The original Tullahoma Shooting Range was opened in 1892 by then- Mayor S.E. Hinton. It was located on Harrison Street just south of downtown Tullahoma. From 1893 to 1899, the range was used as a military academy for officers of the Tennessee Army National Guard. In 1906, Mayor Hinton donated land to the city for a new shooting range and pistol range on Confederate Boulevard east of town square. The first target holders were put up at this location in 1907 and shoot matches were held there until 1948 when they moved to their current location on Forest Drive near Interstate 516. The present day Tullahoma Shooting Range has been open since 1953 and hosts over 100 different types of target events each year including Trap, Skeet, Cowboy Shooters Association shoots (CSKA), USPSA IPSC World Championships (WSC), US Open Match Rifle & Shotgun Events (UOMER), American Century Championships (ACC) as well as several state championships such as Tennessee State Archery Championships (TSAC) and Tennessee Gun Club Championship(TGCC). In addition to its traditional target event schedule, theRange also offers various broomball/tennis/golf tournaments throughout the year along with numerous other NRA member activities such as trap shooting clinics and skeet/shooting clinics.

Polk founded Tullahoma as a town in what is now Montgomery County, Alabama. It was named for the Presque Isle Indian village of Talihoma on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau where he had been born in 1793. In 1869, Tullahoma became the official capital of Jones County after being moved from Montgomery to its present location from downtown Chattanooga following an act of Congress passed during Reconstruction era America. Tullahoma prospered as both a commercial center and agricultural outpost due to its strategic location along Interstate 65 and other transportation links including railroads that served nearby Birmingham, Tennessee and Nashville, Tennessee. During World War II, key figures within the Boosters Club created one of America's largest munitions plants inside Tullahoma – manufacturing munitions for both Axis Germany and Japan – which played a significant role in helping Allied victory over Nazi Germany and Japan during World War II. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or relocated outside of town as technological advancements made it more difficult to produce munitions domestically; however, some continue operations today such as Tyson Foods Inc., which operates major meatpacking plants in central Alabama;heeves International Holdings LLC., one of world’s leading poultry processing companies;and Nissan North America Inc.'s Centerpoint Energy Services Division serving portions of Middle Tennesse region with wind turbine production facilities). Today Tullahoma remains an economically vibrant community with strong ties to its surrounding rural communities through agriculture (the city has long been home to one of Tennessee's largest cotton-growing regions), commerce (including several large grocery stores and two anchors on I-65), education (particularly near downtown), arts & culture (the city has hosted numerous festivals throughout their history), government services (including law enforcement) and recreation (the city has several golf courses).
