The first Europeans to visit what is now Tullahoma were Frenchmen in 1697 and 1701. Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Caballero passed through the area on his way from Mexico City to Nashville in 1795. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's Corps of Engineers built a canal through the Knoxville Mountains leading from Chattanooga to Uniontown, Tennessee. This canal made it possible for goods and soldiers moving between Chattanooga and Uniontown to bypass Tullahoma on their way southward. A cotton gin was built here in 1822 by John Sevier Hannan with assistance from local entrepreneurs including James Boggs and John Sperry. The town began receiving residents in 1828 when Daniel Boone arrived as an exploration scout for General Anthony Wayne during the Creek Warwick–Montgomery Campaign. In 1837, John Crain organized the first bank robbery in eastern Tennessee when he robbed two banks at Kingston Pike and Donelson Highway near Lebanon Junction northeast of today's Tullahoma. At that time, there were no banks east of Decatur Street in downtown Memphis; all banking took place within Memphis limits until after World War II when interstate highways came into being which reduced travel times across state lines so robberies became less common. There was some contention over who founded TIOT- later renamed Tullahoma Institute of Technology- but most historians agree that it was founded by Joseph Greenleaf Mason Sr., a graduate of Vanderbilt University who had earlier served as president of Knoxville College before coming to Marshall County as its first chancellor and then its first mayor (1892 - 1907). Upon completion of new buildings on campus that include an art museum (1911), business school (1917), engineering school (1920), law school (1921) and medical center (1982), TIOT became one of America's largest private universities with more than 27,000 undergraduate students and more than 100 professional schools/disciplines represented on its faculties alone! In 1951 housing development called "The Strip" began just north of I-65 exit 63B off I-24W adjacent to then-Tallahoma Municipal Airport; this eventually led to what is now known as Northgate Mall with anchor stores Old Navy mallinger concessions plus JCPenney anchors Sears & Kmart inside old military airfield hangar property leased from former Tuskegee Air Force Base wingspread!
