The history of Tullahoma, Tennessee begins with the Cherokee Indians who lived in the area for over two centuries. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Georgia and captured a great deal of Indian land. This caused some of the Cherokees to migrate to Tennessee and start anew. The first white people to live in Tullahoma were Captain John Sevier's boys who built a cabin in what is now known as Creek Bottom Road in 1825. A year later, Captain Sevier's son-in-law, James Mays, founded the town of Tullahoma on the banks of the Cumberland River. Mays named his new town after Mount Carmel where he had been baptized as a child. By 1830, there were about 25 residents living in Tullahoma. After Jackson was elected president in 1828, he ordered all Indian property be taken away from the Cherokees and divided among government citizens. As a result of this action, many of the original Cherokee settlers left Tullahoma for good. In 1840, Colonel Nathaniel Lyon moved his family from Nashville to Tullahoma so they could start an agricultural business. He also became interested in politics and decided to run for office against Senator John Crainer Jr., who was then governor of Tennessee. Lyon won easily thanks to his strong support from Tennesseans throughout the state. Soon afterward, Lyon started building churches and other infrastructure within Tullahoma proper while also starting up businesses such as a sawmill and gristmill along with various other ventures that would help make him one of society's most powerful men at that time. After Lyons' death in 1850, his widow Carrie succeeded him as head ofthe household at their home until her death three years later at age 87 years old. At that point control passed through female hands once again until 1860 when Judge James Hensley took control due to President Buchanan appointing him district attorney for Middle Tennessee instead (since women couldn't hold any real political power at that time). Once Hensley came into office however, he quickly put an end to most these female-led affairs by appointing male commissioners instead that would oversee local government operations more effectively (something which still happens today). Tallahomahas seen some growth over time though – largely due to its location close enoughto major population centers like Nashville but far enough awayfrom them so it didn't become overwhelmed by city life or become embroiled in partisan politics like much larger towns did during this period elsewhere across America (eighth century Copper Country was primarily agrarian). In the summer of 1819, Tullahoma was a small town in the heart of Tennessee. It was one of many settlements that were founded by white evangelical Methodists during the Jacksonian Era. The Methodists were a faith based on John Wesley’s teaching that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ and good works. They also believed in developing character through hard work and Bible reading. Tullahoma quickly became known for its manufacturing ecosystem: cotton gin, textile mill, and sawmill. The cotton gin produced most of Tullahoma’s income, but it also produced large amounts of smoke from the many mills. In addition to its importance as a community center, Tullahoma had a strong ecclesiastical presence with several churches and religious orders operating out of it at different times during its history. The Methodist Church built the first school in Tullahoma in 1824-25. It was designed by local architect James Mays and opened for instruction on October 1st, 1825. The school operated until 1859 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by the Panic of 1857. One significant event that took place in Tullahoma between 1819 and 1865 was the Great Migration of African Americans from Deep South America to North America which started in1830s and continued until 1865 when all slaves were abolished across America except for those who remained within Confederate States Of America (CSA). This migration left a lasting legacy on both Tullahomans and their descendants who live there today as well as other parts of Tennessee including Memphis, Knoxville, Johnson City, Chattanooga, Asheville and more
