There are countless stories to be told about Tullahoma, Tennessee. One such story goes back to the early 1800s, when the area was part of a large Indian tribe known as the Shawnees. The Shawnees were originally from Ohio and lived in what is now Kentucky and West Virginia. They migrated to what is now eastern Tennessee in the 18th century and began trading with Native Americans. In 1795, they moved their headquarters from present-day Cincinnati, Ohio, to present-day Tullahoma after gaining approval from the British for their new location. The Shawnee Tribe eventually fell apart in 1814 due to economic reasons and lost all its land in east Tennessee. However, some of their remnants continued living in eastern Tennessee until around 1830. When white settlers arrived in this area during the late 1800s, they encountered these Native American residents and started trading with them again. In 1827, a group of Scottish immigrants named Campbell came to Tullahoma and purchased land from the Shawnees for $1 million dollars. This was one of the largest private donations ever made to charity at that time. At this point, many people thought that Tullahoma would become an important center for Scots-Irish culture because it had been chosen as such by Campbell himself. Instead, however, development slower than expected until around 1870 when entrepreneurs founded various businesses here including lumberyards and breweries (the first commercial brewery being built on Main Street). Tullahoma experienced rapid growth during this time thanks to its location within easy reach of both Chattanooga and Nashville; these cities were becoming major centers for commerce and cultural activity at this point. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses operating here including restaurants, department stores, newspapers/magazines (including The Tennessean), banks/financial institutions, schools (including Tullahoma State University), theaters/theaters etc.). All of these businesses created jobs which helped contribute towards overall prosperity throughout this period; even today few areas have managedto maintain such high levels of economic growth without significant outside assistance! In more recent times there have been several attempts by city officials to revitalize downtown; however progress has so far been slow despite promises made by Mayor Andy Heimerdingerbeckin 2013 alone! currently there are no plans announced nor any current momentum behind revitalization efforts beyond2019! Despite this history though Downtown does still provide interesting glances into pre-industrial days through its architecture and signage
Tullahoma is a city in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Tullahoma was founded by Cherokee and Creek Indian settlers in 1801 and became a town in 1839. It was named for General Andrew Jackson's birthplace, which is located near the city limits. In 1861, after Confederate forces sacked Knoxville, Tennessee, Tullahoma joined Union forces and contributed to the Battle of Chattanooga.
