In 1871, the Government of Tennessee passed an act granting land to the people of Tullahoma. This land was donated by General Andrew Jackson, and it is now known as the Andrew Jackson National Forest. The first permanent settler in this area was James Robertson in 1827. In 1861, Tullahoma became a town under the jurisdiction of Lawrence County. However, in 1865, it merged with Knox County to form Johnson County. In 1907, Tullahoma became a city and was again placed within Knox County until 1912 when it merged into Marshall County. On July 1st, 1913, Johnson and Marshall Counties were combined to form Blount County. The population of Tullahoma peaked at nearly 100,000 in 1920 but has been declining steadily since then due to various factors such as industry moving away and becoming more centralized in other parts of the country. Today there are only a handful of residents living in downtown Tullahoma while most households are located outside the city limits. The history of this small town goes back before anyone even knew what a computer was! One hundred years ago on January 6th 1861 James Robertson set out from his farmstead on Lookout Mountain looking for new land to settle after hearing about Free Negroes living west of Nashville (today’s Vanderbilt University). He found some good ground along Big Creek but decided not to build any houses because he didn’t want white people knowing about his settlement – something he would do all over again today! A few weeks later on January 12th Alexander Beard arrived atRobertson’s cabin with news that President Abraham Lincoln had commuted Robert Easley’s sentence from death row to life imprisonment instead! This event marked an important change for Robertson because now he could finally lay down his roots and start a new life! It wasn’t long before others started coming too; John Fenton came across Robertson’s location on February 3rd and began building himself a cabin just north-west of where Robertson had built his initial home one year earlier! By 1860 there were already around 10 dwellings scattered throughout what is now eastern Johnson and eastern Marshall Counties (now Blount) - many belonging to Scots-Irish immigrants who had come directly from Ireland during America's Great Irish Famine crisis Of course things were different back then: no electricity or running water – just hoes hanging from trees for milk (and sometimes cheese!) And believe me when I tell you: those days were tough enough without having Toilet paper delivered right into your house every day like everyone else did!! But that's another story altogether... oh wait..... :) Today we can see evidence left by these early settlers all over downtown Tullahoma - examples include pioneer cannons still pointing towards Lookout Mountain (the original home),Robertson's original blacksmith shop which still stands today adjacent to the Upper Cumberland Riverwalk/ bike trail run through downtown by BLOUNT COUNTY government employees AND students FREE OF CHARGE!!! In fact if you go inside that old brick building next door you can find ALL sorts of historical relics including several slave pens used by local landowners during cotton planting seasons...... heck even some old cannonballs embedded deep inside!! Today there are also several restaurants located around downtown serving up traditionalTennessee food such as chickenfried steak or pork chop dinners - so if you're feeling fancy head over down for dinner tonight!!! Oh yes... don't forget about those music festivals happening every year either.............. how fun is THAT???
