Tullahoma is a small town in the Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 5,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Milton metropolitan area. The first settlers in Tullahoma were French colonists who arrived in 1795 and named it "Tulhoma." They built a small fort on an island in the river and developed trade with Native Americans. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through central Tennessee to drive out British forces, and he took Tullahoma as his headquarters. When he was elected president, he decided to move westward and found new settlements along the Cumberland River. He named one of these towns after himself, Tullahoma City. In 1810, Congress created what is now Middle Tennessee Territory by splitting off present-day Alabama and Mississippi from Georgia andTennessee. Because this territory was mostly mountain country, many eastern Cherokee Indians living east of the Appalachian Mountains chose instead to live near Nashville rather than move westward into federal land that they knew would be open for white settlement. So when President James Kenedy appointed Colonel John Cranch (a Creek Indian) director of Indian Affairs in 1811, Cherokee leaders offered him their land in what is now Chattanooga if he would settle them there instead of moving them westward into federal land where they would have been subject to removal proceedings. Cranch accepted this offer and founded what is today's Chattanooga on February 14, 1813 – just days after Jackson's inauguration as first Ulysses S Grant's secretary of state. After years of hard work by Cranch's team, including building a road from Chattanooga to Uniontown (now Tellico Hills), cotton plantations began to arrive in Tullahoma beginning around 1830; these people were known as "New Dealers." By 1840 more than 60% of the population had become enslaved Africans American citizens because only white men could own slaves at that time under law . The African American community grew rapidly until such time as all black people were free within three years following Reconstruction (1865). At which point most blacks left for cities or other northern states due to Jim Crow laws forbidding interracial marriage or contact with whites

The town of Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1798 by the British. They named it after the Tullahoma Mountains in present-day Russia. The town was established on a salt lick about two miles from the then newly formed Knox County. In 1802, the town was moved to its current location, which is now part of Knox County. The first courthouse in Tullahoma was built in 1814 and served as the seat of government for much of what followed. Many famous people were born or grew up here, including James Hogg, author of Wuthering Heights and Sense and Sensibility; Andrew Jackson, President of the United States; and General Ulysses S. Grant, leader of the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, following Tennesseans’ vote to secede from the Union, Tullahoma became an Confederate capital city under control of Richmond, Virginia. After Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, Tullahoma returned to Union hands that fall. It played an important role in Reconstruction efforts followingthe war and again experienced significant growth between 1920 and 1940 when it became a major center for agricultural production as well as manufacturing activities within both localities (Fletcher 1978). Today,Tullahoma is a small but vibrant community with many cultural attractions such as its annual Oktoberfest beer festival and Shakespeare Festival
The area now known as Tullahoma was first settled by the Cherokee in the 18th century. The town was founded on the Tennessee River, about two miles east of present-day Chattanooga. In 1819, a post office called Tullahoma was established at what is now downtown Tullahoma. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of about 400 people. By 1840, however, Tullahoma had grown too large for its small community and it became an independent city. In 1850, the Tennessee General Assembly granted city status to Tullahoma and it became one of the state's twenty cities. Tullahoma experienced several economic expansions during its time as an independent city. In 1868-69, local entrepreneurs built a railroads that connected the city with other parts of Tennessee and Georgia.
