Tullahoma is a town in Dekalb County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,976 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The first European to visit Tullahoma was an American Revolutionary War soldier, Nathan Bedford Forrest, in 1796. He named it "Fort Nashborough" in honor of General James Nashborough (1747-1825), who had been instrumental in driving the British from Tennessee. In 1802, President Thomas Jefferson granted a land grant for a school and courthouse at Tullahoma by John Sevier III., Governor of Tennessee Territory. On December 12, 1802, the first towns meeting were held at the First Presbyterian Church on what is now Mount Olivet Road near present day Clarksville; future members of Congress James K. Polk (1846-1912) and Calhoun McCulloch (1873-1954) were among those present. By 1840, when cotton plantations began to be developed along the Cumberland River near Tullahoma proper and other towns such as Phenix City and Lebanon Valley west of town limits - including what are now downtown Nashville – most people living east of Will Rogers Parkway lived off farmer’s markets or exchanged goods with friends and family located west of town limits while many people within city limits still grew food for their own consumption or raised cattle or hogs on large acreages allowed by early settlers. In 1851 Jeremiah Watkins organized a Methodist church here after visiting Tullahoma two years earlier while riding his horse across country to preach to farmers about Gospel salvation through faith in Jesus Christ instead of self-reliance upon natural resources that would eventually fail them Reverend Watkins preached daily from his home until he died March 4th 1865 due to disease contracted during travel from Huntsville Alabama where he was Superintendent of Schools for that state . A belfry/chapel standing today on Old Union Road between US 31st Street & Elm Street marks one cornerstone laid by Rev. Watkins during his time in this important community By 1870 over 50% white residents had moved out leaving black residents largely isolated until passage in 2000 thru 104th congress giving some gain back into community hands

Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1796 by the Shawnee Indians. The town was named for the large tree near its location on the Cumberland River. The first blotch of land in what is now Tullahoma County was purchased from the Cherokees in 1802. In 1816, General Andrew Jackson made his home here and helped to revive the economy of Tullahoma. He also created a military post at Tullahoma to protect traders travelling through Indian Territory. In 1839, Confederate General Braxton Bragg organized a cavalry brigade called "The Tennessee Volunteers" at Tullahoma and advanced towards Chattanooga, Tennessee. Union forces intercepted them near Kingston Pike and drove them back toward Nashville. On July 16,1839, after days of battle, Confederate General Braxton Bragg's brigade finally surrendered at Kingston Pike with over 800 casualties while Union forces had only 30 soldiers dead or wounded. This event is often cited as the turning point of the Civil War in Tennessee. After this victory over Confederate General Braxton Bragg, Union troops began invading southern states such as Alabama and Georgia without any formal declaration of war by President James Kossuth until May 20th when Sherman's armies crossed into Georgia and threatened Mobile Bayou with an open invasion should it not capitulate within 72 hours Aftermath: After defeating Confederate Generals Braxton Bragg and Robert ELee at Kingston Pike (July 16th), Union troops continued advancing northeastward across Indian Territory under general Ulysses S Grant until they reached Chattanooga on August 15th where they pulled back after suffering heavy losses against Johnston's army Today: Today marks one hundred years since General Andrew Jackson arrived in Tullahoma to revive local economies after the Creek War; however there are few reminders that Jackson ever happened here aside from some small historical markers located around town center
Tullahoma was founded by the Cherokee in 1796. The town was named after Tullahoma Mountain, which is located in western Tennessee. It became a major center of trade and industry during the 19th century. In 1814, Tullahoma was designated as the capital of Alabama Territory. It remained that way until 1861 when it transferred to Nashville, Tennessee.
