Tullahoma (pronounced 'tuh-kuh-mah) is a city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 12,242 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Tullahoma was founded on July 4, 1819 by a group of pioneers led by Captain Samuel Ransom and Major James Caldwell. The town was named after the Tunica people who lived nearby and helped to build the first cotton gin in America. The city received its current name from General John Custer during his ill-fated campaign against Cheyenne Chief Little Bighorn in 1876. General Custer's brigade had stopped at Tullahoma for water supplies before moving on to battle near Crazy Horse Hill. The townspeople renamed the street "Custer Avenue" in his honor. The first store opened in Tullahoma on October 12, 1819, with three brick buildings and an addition that cost $5,000 to build. The store operated until 1862 when it burned down due to bad weather conditions and lack of insurance money being available to rebuild it. In 1872, a gristmill was built and started profitability within four months; this mill continued operation until 1978 when it closed due to economic difficulties including overproduction caused by deregulation of agriculture which led to increased competition among farmers throughout the region causing mills like this one closure). In 1865 Confederate Brigadier General Gideon Welles decided not to pursue Ulysses S Grant's army through West Tennessee after learning that Union forces were massing at Corinth River Bridge just south of town limits - this decision likely saved many lives as well as allowing Union forces more time for reinforcement between Chattanooga and Knoxville making possible what would have been an disastrous offensive into central Tennessee had they pursued Grant instead Tullahoma experienced two fires: One started by accident while firefighters were putting out another fire at a local grocery store on December 15th 1861; this fire destroyed most of downtown with loss of life also resulting from injuries sustained from flying sparks from burning produce In 1863 arsonists set several shops and buildings ablaze during Union occupation raids occasioned by secessionist sentiment across sections east Tennessean plantations southern Alabama plantation

Grant's army during his march from Chattanooga to Knoxville and then to Murfreesboro. In 1870, Tullahoma became one of three cities in Tennessee that seceded from the United States and formed their own state called Alabama. In 1905, Tullahoma burned down due to a major fire that destroyed most of the city center and killed several people.
