The town of Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by General John C. Fremont and his brigade of Union cavalry. The town was named for the Seminole word "Tullahoma" meaning "a place where the water is sweet." The first store in Tullahoma opened in 1825. In 1828, a school was built and the first teacher, James Hargrave, taught there. The town experienced some growth during the 1830s when slaves were brought to work in farming and manufacturing businesses. However, during the 1840s and 1850s, Tullahoma experienced a period of decline as its residents lost their jobs and incomes dried up. By 1860, only a few hundred people remained in Tullahoma. It wasn't until after the Civil War that interest in Tullahoma revived and it began to grow again as a tourist destination. In 1865, local merchants started construction on what would become known as the Old Courthouse which still stands today. This building played an important role in developing business ties between Tullahoma and Nashville because it housed court records for much of this time period. By 1870, Tourist attractions such as hotels and plantations had been established around town so that visitors could see various aspects of life during these years of change. Throughout these years, many improvements were made to downtown Tullahoma including new buildings such as a library (1878), post office (1892), bank (1896), cotton gin (1900), hospital (1911), theater (1920), fire hall (1927) and community center (1982). Today, downtown is home to several stores including Macy's Department Store; JCPenney; Sears-Roebuck; Lowe's Home Improvement; Belk department store; Ford Motor Company dealership adjacent to Goodwill Industries Warehouse;; Knoxville Fedex Office located across from Walmart;} Today’s downtown area has evolved considerably over its history with major renovation projects completed throughout recent decades including: renovation of Main Street/Downtown square into an open air plaza called “Broadwalk” with public art installations by artist DonatellO ; reconstruction of five blocks north along High Street from I-240 southward culminating with plans for an $80 million dollar mixed use redevelopment project that will include luxury apartmentsites atop existing commercial properties parcels northeast thereof – all within walking distance from both State Capitol Visitors Center & implimentation park associated with same – retail/entertainment district complete w/ extensive ground floor programming featuring 12 high level restaurants/bars/cafés located within easy reach Of numerous cultural attractions statewide surrounding city limits viz.; State Capitol Visitor Center - features 9 exhibit galleries &over 50 shops/restaurants ; Implimentation Park - includes multiple sports venues &multi-purpose arena capable hosting large events ; Over 60 acres nature preserve offering year round outdoor recreation opportunities .

The battle represented one of the largest slave revolts thatoutherners had ever experienced. When Union forces arrived at Tullahoma on April 12, 1865, they found an already-burned city with only a few hundred residents remaining. Confederate troops had withdrawn from Tullahoma less than two months earlier prior to this event. Although Reconstruction ended with Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1870, many aspects of Tennessean society remain unchanged today including its strong sense of communityivism and its history as a center for cotton production
Tullahoma, Tennessee was founded in 1796 by Captain John Sevier as the seat of a justice of the peace. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1812 it had a population of 1,200. In 1815, Tullahoma became the capital of what is now Alabama. In 1819, on orders from President James K. Polk, Tullahoma burned to the ground in order to prevent Confederate forces from using it as their temporary headquarters during the Mobile Campaign.
