However, he continued to influence Tennessee politics through his political friends and donations. When he died in 1845 at age 82 after a long illness, Tullahoma had become one of America’s most important small towns.

Tullahoma, Tennessee is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Tennessee. The population was 1,391 at the 2010 census. From its establishment in 1795 until 1815, Tullahoma served as the capital of what is now Cherokee County. After being evacuated by federal troops during the American Civil War, Tullahoma returned to full operation as a small college town in 1865. The area today known as Tullahoma was settled by freed slaves and their families from Georgia in the 1840s and early 1850s. By 1860, there were only a handful of residents living in what is now downtown Tullahoma. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction's end in 1865, many African Americans moved into Tullahoma to make way for white settlers who had come to take advantage of newly opened Freedmen's Bureau land grants. Many African Americans also worked on local farms and businesses while they awaited their own future. The arrival of white farmers and entrepreneurs transformed downtown Tullahoma into one of the most vibrant communities on the lower Cumberland Plateau during this time period. Businesses such as grist mills, sawmills, cheese factories and other industries soon sprang up around downtown streets that still remain today: Main Street, Holcombe Avenue (now Riverfront Drive), Second Street (now Pettus Boulevard) and Third Street (now Botanical Avenue). In 1881-1882, when cotton prices collapsed due to drought conditions across much of America, business owners closed their doors for good within weeks of each other throughoutmuchofthesouthwest US due to an event called "the Great Famine". This economic disaster caused many black citizens to lose their homes and livelihoods; however, centralized power remained with whites throughout muchofthistimeperioddue tot he lack of self-government among black citizens within Cherokee County." In 1907-1908property values began skyrocketing after construction began on Nashville's first high school which would become Tuskegee A&M University; this led to increased demand for housing within city limits which then created new opportunities for businesses around downtown areas like Main Street where property values continued to increase rapidly throughout this time period"As word spread about Tuskegee A&M University's great programs available locally - both undergraduate and graduate - more people decided it was worth moving closer than ever before"During these yearsTullahoma experienced rapid growth thanks largely to its relationship with Tuskegee A&M University which continues even today". On January 25th 1948 Mabel Simmons became the first black woman elected Mayor of Tullahoma after serving two terms between 1947-1949
