Tullahoma is a small town in southeastern Tennessee. It is located on the Cumberland River, about 35 miles (55 km) north of Nashville and 25 miles (40 km) east of Memphis. The population was 5,993 at the 2010 census. Tullahoma's history goes back to 1819 when Yankees from New York built a trading post near what is now Tullahoma Lake. In 1828, the town was founded by Revolutionary War veteran John Sevier, who named it for his birthplace, Tultehoma, in upstate New York. The first courthouse was built in 1829 and until 1861 it was the only government building in the town. The growth of Tullahoma slowed after World War II because so many people moved to cities or left for economic reasons. However, since 2000 there has been an increase in development around the downtown area which has led to more jobs and businesses being opened up hereabouts. In fact, last year alone there were new businesses opening up all over the city – some that have never before existed hereabouts! One thing that makes Tullahoma special is its strategic location on both sides of the Cumberland River – perfect for riverboat travel and easy access to all that Nashville has to offer! When Tennessee seceded from the United States in 1861, black Tennesseans were among the first to suffer as a result. Many were forced into slavery or worked off-farm opportunities until they could be Freedman. Afterward, many struggled with racism and discrimination throughout much of post-war America. However, Tullahoma demonstrated resilience through multiple challenges such as becoming one of the most diverse cities in Tennessee when it ratified an antidiscrimination ordinance in 1970; hosting numerous major events related to World War II; and becoming home to several hundred thousand people following theHurricane Katrina disaster in 2005. Today, Tullahoma is one of the most racially diverse cities in Tennessee with nearly 60% Non-Hispanic White residents; 30% African American; 10% Asian/Pacific Islander (API); 5% Hispanic/Latino; 2% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders; 1% Multiracial/Multiracial individuals make up about 20%. The downtown area is home to more than 150 businesses employing over 4500 workersand is known for its arts scene which includes music venues such as Earls Court Ballroom & Apollo Theater as well as museums such as Sam Boyd Landmark Museum of History & Art and Volunteer Fire Department museum across from City Hall
In 1861, Tullahoma was chartered as a county seat. In 1871, the citizens of Tullahoma voted to incorporate as a city. On April 12, 1876, the first general election in Tullahoma was held and Mayor John W. Hargrave was elected with over 50% of the vote. The population of Tullahoma grew rapidly during this time and by 1907 it had reached 234 residents. On December 5, 1912, Mayor Hargrave submitted a petition for incorporation into the city of Knoxville which passed with 71% support from the voters. The City Council then ratified the incorporation on January 6, 1913. The city's population peaked at 496 residents in 1925 but declined gradually until it reached 346 by 1970. It has since remained around 350 residents
