In 1863, during the American Civil War, Tullahoma sided with the Union side. As a result, many residents were taken into captivity or killed by Confederate forces. After the war ended, many residents returned to their homes and businesses. The population of Tullahoma continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1920 at over 10,000 people. However, by 1940 it had shrunk to under 7500 people. During the 1990s and 2000s there were efforts made to revitalize downtown Tullahoma and help spur economic development within the community. Today, downtown is home to a number of businesses and cultural attractions including an art museum, jazz restaurant/barbecue joint and several theaters district restaurants
Tullahoma is the county seat of Marshall County, Tennessee. The town was founded in 1837 by subscription from area farmers. The first post office was established in 1838. In 1861, the Union Army burned down the courthouse and most of the town to prevent Confederate forces from taking it over. Tullahoma became a city in 1907 and grew rapidly as a result of its location on the Great Lakes Railroad. It had a population of about 60,000 by 1930. A severe tornado struck Tullahoma on April 15, 1965, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more.
