The Town of Tullahoma, in Russell County, Tennessee was first settled by Caucasian Americans in the early 1800s. The town was named after a Cherokee chief's village called Tulla-homa. The first white settlers arrived in 1802 and built a log cabin on the site of present day Tullahoma. By 1815, Tullahoma had several stores, a school and a courthouse. A post office was established in 1824 and initial mail service between Chattanooga and Tullahoma was provided by wagon trains. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest tried to invade Union territory through what is now Russell County. On January 8th of that year, he attacked an Union force at Little Rock Creek Bridge over the Cumberland River. After losing many men and supplies, Forrest retreated to north Alabama. In 1865, Tennessee became an Confederacy state following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in all U.S territories except for Texas & Mexico). After the war ended, returning veterans moved into previously unoccupied black neighborhoods in downtown Chattanooga while white civilians vacated their homes around the periphery of town for fear of integration or race riots (which never happened). In 1882–1883 local farmers started growing corn on new land outside town limits; this began what would become known as "the Corn Belt" period of growth for Tullahomans – until other crops replaced corn as their primary source of income starting around World War II when mechanization made farming less feasible. Tullahoma experienced some403 dramatic population changes from 1860 to 2000: from 2 resident families per 1000 residents then to 25 per 1000 residents during Reconstruction; to 100+ per1000 residences by 1940 due to postwar migration (mainly African American); to just under 50 per1000 residents by 2000 due to whites leaving/moving out (mainly German/Italian) without taking any jobs with them – leaving behind high levels of poverty and crime among citizens who have little say in government decisions about how their community will be structured or managed moving forward despite being annexed by Nashville grow
The first white settler in Tullahoma was Ebenezer Scrooge, who arrived in 1825. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who died in 1837. In 1865, the Union army landed at Landing Place and burned the town to the ground. It was rebuilt a few years later but again destroyed by fire in 1887.
