Tullahoma is a small town located in 18 counties of Tennessee. It is the most populous community in Hardin County, with a population of only 8,853 as of the 2010 census. In 1863, when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army through Hardin County to invade Kentucky, he camped at Tullahoma and ordered his men not to leave their horses or supplies behind. In 1796, the area now known as Tullahoma was part of the Cherokee Nation. The first white settlers in what is now Tullahoma County were pioneers named John and Rebecca Hargrave. They arrived in 1797 and began to clear land. In 1803, they married Jane Randolph, who had also come to Tennessee from Kentucky. The couple started a family and soon built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. They raised cattle and pigs, and produced maize, beans, and other vegetables for their own use. By 1810, they had grown tired of living in one spot and decided to move downriver to what is now East Tennesse City. The Hargraves continuedproducing crops until 1819 when malaria reached them from outposts along the river. Jane died soon after at age 58; John survived her by 26 years, until his death in 1850 at age 80. Today's Tullahoma community was founded by John Randolph's grandson Benjamin Neely in 1881 as the nucleus around which more developed businesses sprang up throughout the county while still remainin close proximity with individual families until recently."
