It had acquired several important properties including a millinery store and academy which later became known as University Hall (now part of UT). In addition, it built several brick buildings such as Post Office (now part of TN State Fairgrounds), City Hall (later used as an apartment complex) and First Baptist Church (built in 1854). Many other businesses followed suit over time – including a cotton gin, bakery and grocery store among them – making Springfield one of the most bustling communities in central Tennessee during this period. However, times quickly changed during the Civil War era. For one thing, agriculture didn’t fare well under Confederate rule; consequently, production fell short compared with what had been accomplished during previous decades. Furthermore, food shortages set in after April 1861 when Union forces captured Knoxville from Confederate forces following months-long siege. As a result, many Tennesseans turned their backs on their Confederate neighborings and chose instead to fight for their own country rather than remain at home with no options but starvation or surrendering unconditionally. This decision ultimately led to much suffering within both Union and Confederate camps – not only for those living in CentralTennessee but also for those inside Missouri where food supplies were tightly controlled by Confederates seeking revenge against their former allies/enemies. When peace finally came about three years later following General Ulysses S Grant’s successful march through Georgia & Alabama—the largest military campaign ever mounted on American soil—what little remainedof CentralTennessee slipped away into oblivion while land that once housed more people now lies fallow beneath feet leaving behind memories Of Now And Then….
The city of Springfield, Tennessee was founded in 1829 by General John C. Brown and his family. The city grew rapidly and by 1840 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1853, the state legislature passed a bill designating Springfield as the seat of government for all of Hardin County. The settlement began to grow quickly and in 1857 the first courthouse was built on Main Street. In 1861, the Union army Battle of Corinth occurred in nearby Athens, TN and an estimated 3,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in what is known as the largest battle of the American Civil War. As a result of this event, Springfield became one of the most heavily fought cities during the war. In 1865, following Reconstruction efforts in America after the Confederate victory at Gettysburg, Springfield's political boundaries were redrawn and it became part-time Johnson County with its own sheriff and government buildings but with strong connections to Knoxville. After World War II ended in 1945, Henderson County was formed from portions of Hardin County including Springfield and other towns within Johnson County. With rapid population growth over time (the current population is over 26,000), new neighborhoods have been developed throughout downtown Springfield while older neighborhoods have been preserved.
