However, despite this initial setback, Springfield prospered through growth into the 1840s as both a farming community and an industrial center due to its strong ties with local banks and mills as well as its position along the river for transportation and trade. By 1850, however, increasing economic competition from other parts of Tennessee had led to decline in business activity throughout much of Jackson County; accordingly, Springfield's population fell below 1 thousand by 1880. However, following establishment of a post office in 1861 (the only such outpost west of Nashville), rapid growth resumed thanks largely to influxes of new residents seeking opportunities away from Union military service during World War I (and also because more people began arriving after Reconstruction). The population reached 5,000 by 1930 after experiencing steady growth throughout most of the twentieth century – reaching 10 thousand by 2000 – continuing until recent declines caused by demographic changes (including gentrification) among Indianapolis-led suburbanization some distance northward along Interstate 65

The town was founded in 1868 by veterans of the Union Army who had fought in the Civil War. The original name for the town was "New Market." In 1883, it changed its name to Springfield after General James M. Ferguson, an officer in Sherman's army and a delegate from this township to the state constitutional convention that year. Springspring became a full-fledged city on July 1, 1907 when it incorporated as a result of an act of the Tennessee General Assembly. At that time, there were only two other cities in Hardin County: Lebanon and Lumberton. The early years of Springfield were difficult; during World War I, until 1922 when cotton prices resumed their normal level following America's entry into World War II, local farmers could not afford to produce crops because they could not sell them back to buyers outside of TN and ARLH/STRK/. However with increased production due to advances in technology and innovation brought about by war efforts such as tractorized farming and chemical fertilization (the use of products which would kill weeds), economic conditions have improved greatly over time culminating with current levels of prosperity seen throughout much of TN/ARLH/. In recent years several downtown businesses have closed or relocated outmoded practices such as cycle tracks through neighborhoods instead using public transportation which benefits everyone involved including pedestrians & cyclists alike; new development has taken center stage with many homes being built atop old warehouses – more reminiscent of Chattanooga than Nashville – giving rise to what some call "Springfield 2025". One trend we’ve noticed lately is people moving away from high-cost housing areas towards medium-priced housing closer thereto so commuters can continue living close enoughto work but also enjoying all that makes Nashville so great while avoiding some expensive things (like downtown).
