The early history of Springfield is intertwined with that of its neighboring communities such as Hendersonville and Nashville. Hendersonville was founded by Captain James Robertson in 1790 and soon became one of Tennessee’s most important settlements due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Cumberland River. By 1800, Hendersonville had become an agricultural community with stores, churches, mills, and homes catering to both European traders looking for goods unavailable elsewhere or Native American populations who hunted their way through these areas for food sources. In 1810–11, Lieutenant Colonel John Sevier transporting troops across country stopped at Hendersonville on his way from Cumberland Gap to Knoxville; he recommended that this halt be established at what is now known as Springfield because he thought it would be an ideal spot for military encampments given its close proximity to two major rivers and easy access to transportation services. With this stop came new opportunities for commerce which local entrepreneur Isaac Asbury quickly exploited; after spending time touring Memphis he brought back materials needed for building a new courthouse which opened in 1816 on First Street near present-day State Capitol Drive; this courthouse also served as headquarters for Judge Advocate General Nathan Houston during Creek War (1817-19) against Spanish forces under Governor Andrew Jackson A secondstorey addition was added to this structure in 1830 serving as an arsenal until 1861 when Confederate forces burned it down while attacking Union soldiers outside Knox County Courthouse In 1865 local businessman Waddell Stephenson donated land east of town along Third Avenue so that people could build homes without having their property taxed However despite these efforts much progress had not been made towards restoring old buildings within town limits following World War II which lead Mayor Loyd Mills Jr., D-Springfield petitioned Congress asking them “to provide funds specifically earmarked for such purposes” but no response was received Since then growth within town limits has again accelerated resulting in increased development pressures including plans announced last year by city officials calling for construction of an indoor/outdoor amphitheater/pool complex totaling more than $50 million dollars slated to open by 2027
