In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Springfield his official hometown while visiting Memphis during his tour of southern America before returning to Washington D.C.. From 1941 through 1945, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima, much activity centered around Springsville due to World War II production activities at nearby Lockheed Aircraft plants Number 5 (now West End) and 6 (now Monterrey). However, few people living within boundaries including those within City limits were directly affected by war-time events; most were located outside areas heavily impacted bybombing raids or military engagements such as Battle Creek and Knoxville which took place days or weeks after bombings occurred throughout Greater Tennessean
Springfield was founded in 1799 by Colonel John Butler. The town became a state capital in 1815 and was the site of the Battle of Springfield on May 6, 1815, in which Union forces were victorious over Confederate forces. In 1865, the Union army burned down Springfield during their march through Tennessee to end the Civil War.
