Since the late 1800s, Springfield has been a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee. It is known for its historical significance as the home of General James H. Wilson and his family during the American Civil War. The town also played an important role in the history of slavery in Tennessee. In 1812, General James H. Wilson founded what would become Springfield on land he purchased from John Sevier. The town was originally called "Newburgh," after Newburgh, New York, where Wilson's father had settled in 1786. In 1814, when Colonel Isaac Shelby moved his forces into Hardin County to fight against relief efforts by General Andrew Jackson, Springfield became part of the county. The first courthouse in Springfield was built in 1824 and replaced a log cabin that had been used for court proceedings since 1798. The courthouse burned down in 1837 but was rebuilt with stone and brick using money donated by local farmers and citizens. The new courthouse served as the seat of government until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. A new courthouse was built at present-day Springfield and opened on April 14, 1886. During World War I, Springfield served as a training center for army troops stationed in nearby Chattanooga. After the war ended, many soldiers returned to their homes while others continued to live and work atSpringfield until they were discharged or transferred to other locations around Tennessee years later completely out of memory or recognition among most people living there then - save one self-taught historian who decided to document this forgotten history! A post office called "Springfield" first appeared on November 1, 1840; it functioned under postal code 72701 until May 3rd 1870 when it changed its name to "Greenville." On September 3rd 1907 Principal Agent J G Herndon announced plans for construction of a school building which would replace an old log schoolhouse which had been condemned as unsafe due to wear and tear from use). Construction began on October 20th 1907; this new building served as our current high school from 1917 through 2018! In 1933 (the same year that President Franklin D Roosevelt announced “The New Deal”), much work took place within our old high school including installation of air conditioning which allowed us finally be able to enjoy our hot summer weather once again! We are grateful for all these years of progress made within our walls!
