The plant produced pistols including the Colt revolver and Remington shotgun models. In 1899 the company moved again to its current location on Elm Street in downtown Springfield. This new location allowed for more efficient production of handguns and made room for larger gun magazines which helped make Springfield one of the leading firearms manufacturers of its time.

In 1829, Captain John Flanders built a fortuitous location for himself on Caney Fork River west of present-day downtown Springfield – just across from where he would later store his supplies during the American Civil War. This strategic location made it easy for Union forces to block Confederate supply lines while allowing Union troops passage through without being attacked by Confederate forces on their march eastward towards Chattanooga. In 1855, Colonel James Robertson founded what would become known as Robertson's grocery store on Main Street in downtown Springfield; this store became an important local provider of groceries until it closed its doors in 1975. During World War II, many people who lived in town worked at nearby factories manufacturing munitions; most residents left during the postwar period because of high costs associated with living close to military production sites. However, some people have returned since then to live and work in town; these people make up about 10% of today's population. Today, much like during earlier periods when there was little economic activity outside of town, poverty remains an issue within city limits due to limited resources combined with high housing prices relative to average incomes in surrounding suburbs

When World War I began in 1914, Springfield became one of the first municipalities to volunteer for military service and contributed men and materials to various units throughout artillery batteries at Camp Butler on Riverbend Lake south of town. When World War II began in 1939 with Japan's Attack on Pearl Harbor (), many people decided they would not be drafted because they did not believe that America would go into war again (although some families did). However when Germany invaded Poland (), many citizens volunteered to fight because they felt that it was their duty as Americans (). As things turned out there were financial reverses during World War II which reduced tax collections but also caused businesses failures (). City leaders came up with plans to rebuild following the devastation wrought by conflict; however this never happened due to lack of resources or political will at all levelsRalph Whitehead is especially credited for developing Memphis' "Pioneering Plan" which called for construction of roads and other infrastructure projects such as libraries
