The Springfield Arsenal was founded in 1836 and became one of the most important gun facilities in the United States during the 19th century. The town of Springfield, Tennessee is located in the extreme northeast corner of the state. The population was 3,829 as of the 2010 census. It has been a small community for over 100 years and its history can be traced back to 1811 when settlers from Kentucky came down the Cumberland River and began to settle what is now Springfield. In that year, General Andrew Jackson awarded land to them in what is now Memphis, Tennessee for their efforts in helping win the War of 1812. This grant made Springfield an important center for trade and commerce during the early 1800s. Additionally, it was at this time that Springfield became known as "the Athens of the East." In 1818, Congressman James K. Polk appointed John Prentice as justice of the peace for Greene County. Soon after, he built a home on Brushy Lane which served as his office until his death in 1865. During this time period, many prominent citizens were born within these walls including: Amos Kendall (founder of Kendall & Ford Publishing Company), James Hogg (grandfather of Knoxville native Hogg School District), George Willard (a Ulysses S. Grant donor who helped fund Vanderbilt University), Calvin Coolidge (Ulysses S., Sr.'s Vice President), Grover Cleveland (Ulysses S., Jr.'s first U.S. President) and Franklin D Roosevelt (FDR's first term). In 1913, a group of nine young men from Illinois decided they would move to Tennessee to start anew after experiencing awful conditions living in Chicago while their families tried to recover from World War I wreckage there with little hope for reconstruction assistance coming their way despite promises being made by then-President Woodrow Wilson himself! Led by future governor Of Illinois Richard Meckel III and banker Andrew Mellon – two staunch conservatives – they set out on foot down One Hundred Mile Road through Arkansas Valley making stops at Opryland amusement park before finally arriving at Springfield on October 12th where they metamorphosed into "The Old Nine Men."
