The history of Springfield can be traced back to where it currently stands on July 12th 1796 when General James Robertson founded what is now called Goodlettsville on land he acquired from Mr.[?] Hickman during his campaign for sheriff in Robertson's initial run for office against incumbent Jeffries[2]. On this day Goodlettsville grew slowly due largely because no one wanted to move away from their homes near Chattanooga which was then booming with business thanks to its new railroad connections[3]. However after Hickman died young in 1805 his sonWilliam Hickman took up where his father left off and started buying land east of Chattanooga for settlement purposes[4]. Eventually William Hickman donated 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Goodlettsville along Upson Pike (now Old Spring Hill Road)[5] which became part-of-Springfield on July 12th 1796[6]. Unfortunately even thoughGoodlettstown Liveled fast growing community early on some people did leave because they could not stomach living near military installations EastoftheHendersonCountyLine( later Tomoka Ammunition Plant ).Some others decided that they would rather live close enough so they could still visit their families every week while others decided that moving closer would make more sense financially After much talk among friends everyone agreed upon building a small log cabin/ school house just northwestof present day Stonington Cemetery at what is now known as Strawbridge Lane[]7 []8 []9 []10 []11[]12[]13[]14[]15[]16[]17(). It soon became apparent that such an isolated spot could not hold long so a meeting was called September 10th 1796 [18]:21 {}22 []23 {}24 (). After much debate someone finally came up withthe following plan which would become effective October 15th: 25 []26 []27 ]. A road will be built connecting Strawberry Lane directlytopresent day Springhill Drive (). This road will serve as botha gate into our community and also as an access point forlocal farmers who wish to sell their products outside our Walls . 28
In 1812, the first permanent white settlement in Tennessee was made at Springfield. The town primarily grew up around the Forgan's Bank and mercantile buildings on Main Street. The town Noble Chapel was founded about a mile to the east of Springfield. It is believed that early settlers were Methodists from North Carolina. In 1814, President James K. Polk sent an army into Tennessee to repel a Confederate attack on Nashville. The battle resulted in the death of more than 100 soldiers and civilians, including many of Springfield's residents. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee occupied Springfield for several weeks before withdrawing back to Chattanooga with his army. On July 14, 1861, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Springfield with his forces and announced he would be marching north to help Governor John Bell against General David Hogg's forces in Clarksville. After hearing this news, many people within Springfield began to arm themselves and prepare for war. On October 12th, 1861, Union troops stormed through the town gates and routed Hogg's force near what is now Midtown Park northeast of downtown Springfield
