Springfield is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 66,191 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Springfield was founded in 1819 by General John Cade and named after Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1865, the town was moved to its current location due to land speculation by entrepreneur Solomon Spruce. The city was incorporated on December 1, 1881. The current mayor is Donnie Stoneham. The history of Springfield can be traced back to 1819 when General John Cade established a trading post near what is now known as downtown Springfield. He called it "Springfield" because he thought that the name would bring attention to his new place. On November 11, 1821, General Cade and his men were attacked by Cherokee Indians near modern-day Knoxville; this led to the Battle of Spring Hill which ended with the Indians' loss. The attack also served as an initial warning to any future travelers about possible Indian hostilities in this area. On January 16, 1822, President James Kossuth issued a proclamation ordering all Americans west of Kentucky Line not to sell Arms or ammunition without first obtaining written permission from Congress – this order applied specifically to Springfieldians who had stockpiled weapons for defense against Native American attacks! In 1865, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Union forces invaded Tennessee and occupied much of central Tennessee including Springfield proper. After Confederate forces recaptured some parts of central Tennessee they advanced on Springfield but were stopped at what became known as Bloody Pond outside present day downtown Greene Street and Rt 10A where Union General Jubal Early's army surrendered on April 12th 1865 just hours before enemy troops were able to capture Fort Donelson within sight of downtown Knoxville! This event marks one notable victory for Union troops during the war while also demonstrating how effectively civilians could cooperate with military forces under wartime conditions – something that would be important later during Reconstruction efforts following America's return from war). For many years afterwards residents in surrounding towns took pride in their part in helping support Yankee soldiers by providing food and shelter until such time as these same troops could fight again across state lines…a sentiment perpetuated today through local parades honoring veterans and military families living nearby! One significant event that took place during those early days at Butler University (now Butler University Health System) located just east of downtown Springfield occurred on November 8th 1861 when Confederate general Robert E Lee arrived there for a conferencesponsored by Ulysses S Grant – events leading up to Chattanooga Campaign which saw major battles around Nashville & Murfreesboro TN several weeks later! At least one street corner still bears signage commemorating that day: Second Street South between College Drive & Lamar Boulevard NE currently contains two statues honoring fallen Union Soldiers from that battle: One stands tall next to an old cotton gin while another sits atop a large granite boulder located behind First Baptist Church across College Drive NE from Interstate 40 exit #2!). If you drive down Second Street South past Lamar Boulevard NE you will come upon another statue honoring Private First Class William H Cumberland who died moments prior while serving beside Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest at Chickamauga Creek Bridge!! Cumberland's statue can be found just north of Third Street SE between Lamar Boulevard NE & I-40 Exit 34B)! Unfortunately too many people have neglectedto tell these storytellers about this great local hero - so please feel free To contact us if you want more information about him!!! During reconstruction efforts following America's return from World War II (1945-1949), much activity took place inside and around downtown GreeneStreetNE adjacent thereto including socializing among GI's returning home after battle areas like Okinawa Japan etc., business meetings/strategy sessions hosted by various civic organizations associated with postwar reconstruction such as the National Commission on Human Rights chaired by Dr Harry Lawson (!), Memphis Mayor Henry Dudley playing hostess at various functions etc…..during 1951 thru 1957 most notably however football games played outdoors being played either at Municipal Stadium or Campbell Park both located closeby although Coliseum now used largely for other purposes….the government purchased Lot 7 along Riverfront Parkway adjacent thereto resulting in additionof nearly 350 dwellings plus commercial/residential development over ensuing decades……………….. renaissance times continued into Late 1990’s thru 2002 when then Mayor Donnie Stoneham initiatedRestoration Plan aggressive demolition program beginning almost immediately….homecomings reached busy streetside intersections late evening rush hour throughout weekdays becoming increasingly less common since then……………..today’s sprawling skyline containing numerous high rise buildings surrounded by vast green lawnlands remains essentially unchanged since 1880 despite population growth reaching nearly 20K residents sometime between 2000&2010………………………………………………………………………..
