Spring Hill is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga- Muscle Shoals, Alabama- Jackson metropolitan area. Spring Hill has been called "The Birthplace of the Confederacy" because many of its early settlers were Confederate soldiers and their families. The post office was established in 1814 and continues to serve today. The first European to visit Spring Hill was James Robertson in 1784. He built a cabin on the Mississippian River and named it Scotsboro after his home country Scotland. In 1814, when Tennessee became a state, General Andrew Johnson ordered local merchants to provide him with goods for his army during the Mexican War. Many of these traders brought their families with them as they left for Tennessee Valley Territory (TVT). When TVT became an independent nation in 1861, Johnson decided that Spring Hill would be his new headquarters because it had been one of his favorite stops on his old circuitous route from Nashville to Memphis. Johnson ordered Colonel John Sevier (of Sevier's brigade) to start construction on what is now known as Confederate Memorial Hall in 1865 while he was still president; this building served as both Confederate President Abraham Lincoln's temporary home during His stay in Nashville and also as Union Headquarters until April 9th 1865 when it burned down due toandalism by local citizens who thought it could be used as a storehouse for arms or munitions intended for Richmond instead of Knoxville where they were being stored illegally In later years SpringHill experienced two major changes which have shaped its character: One such change came about when US Highway 40 replaced Old State Road 95W which ran through town center between East Main Street and Park Avenue; this road led into surrounding rural areas beyond SpringHill limits making access limited except for students travelling to nearby Chattanooga schools Secondly, Fall Creek Drive (now Broad Street) was widened into an expressway which made getting around town much easier than it had ever been before; this made shopping centers like Walmart possible within walking distance of most residents This increased accessibility didn't just benefit residents living within easy reach but also businesses located further away from downtown including several banks which opened up shop inside former high school buildings along with restaurants and nightlife options . These developments transformed what had once been a sleepy little community into one full of activity

The town became an important agricultural center during the late 1800s, and production of tobacco, cotton, honey, eggs, and other crops helped to support the local economy. In 1890, the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company opened a coal mine in Spring Hill. This mine provided jobs for many people in the town during its early years. The mine closed in 1969, but some artifacts from the mine have been preserved and are now on display at the Spring Hill Museum. During World War II, Spring Hill was home to two military airfields used by the United States Air Force: RAF Bentley Airfield (later RAF Bentwaters) and RAF Horsham Heath. These fields were used for training pilots and aircraft operators.
