The history of Spring Hill goes back to 1814 when Colonel James Herron and his family settled in what is now SpringHill. They were some of the earliest settlers in Williamson County. The original home of the Herrons still stands and is used as a museum today. In 1865, General Forrest burned down SpringHill plantations near present-day Greeneville to prevent their slaves from escaping to freedom. This event is celebrated each year on Easter by giving free eggs to families living in SpringHill businesses and homes across the county. "There never was such an unyielding slaveholder as General Forrest," said one resident recently about this important period in Tennessee's history." Although many people believe that General Forrest destroyed all or most of SpringHill during these Burning days, it remains true that not a single plantation was spared - even those located within easy reach of Nashville! In fact, many former slaves who had managed to escape returned soon after the burning thanks to new leadership which had been installed by General Forrest himself." As a result of this episode in Knoxville's early history, much has changed over time at Springhill - including both its residents and its economy which has grown increasingly diversified since then. One example can be seen currently with regard to agriculture whereSpringHill has become one of Tennessee's leading planting communities due largely to advances made by our own farmers' organizations serving soybeans*, corn* etc., as well as other crops grown hereabouts". Spring Hill was platted in 1875 and named for General James Sprague Hill. The first post office in SpringHill was established in 1879. The town rapidly grew due to its location on the Cumberland River and agricultural production. However, during World War II, SpringHill became one of the most heavily bombed towns in the United States because of its proximity to Chattanooga Army Air Field. After the war, local businesses slowly recovered and resumed their normal activities. Today, SpringHill remains a small community with active civic life and an important cultural center for its region.

The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, due to its location on the Cumberland River and its access to transportation such as boats and railways. By 1871, Spring Hill had a population of 4,000 residents. However, during the American Civil War, Spring Hill sided with Confederate forces and lost many of its citizens. In 1865, after the war ended, SpringHill reverted back to Union control. By 1870,Spring Hill had a population of 3,500 residents. However, over time the population growth stopped and by 1980 it had shrunken to 1,600 residents.
