Spring Hill is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Spring Hill is located on the banks of the Maumee River and is bordered by Lookout Mountain to the north, Chestnut Ridge to the east, Madison Heights to the south and west, and Fayetteville to the northwest. The name "Spring Hill" derives from two sources: one source says that springhill means "place where trees grow"; another source says that springhill means "spring place." The first account suggests that this place may have been named for a springsource in nearby Auburn which was said to be so thick with water that carts could not navigate it without getting lost. In 1797 John Sevier moved his family from Kentucky into Cumberland County and started a homestead called SpringHill on what is now Spring Hill Road. He naming it for his home state of Kentucky since he had never seen it firsthand until he moved there himself some years earlier. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Tennessee duringthe War of 1812 while under way through Cumberland County and destroyed many homes along with or near SpringHill Road as they retreated back across TN state line into Alabama. Jackson's men were described as being "so mad at having got so close to us we destroyed everything we found". Jackson later awarded land around SpringHill road (now known as Lookout Mountain Road) to General James Ketchum in recognition for helping him retake Nashville after its fall during the American Civil War (1861-1865). At least one house still stands today onlookout mountain road just east of junction with SR 249/SR 260 (later US 24), built c1900 by local resident Herman Epps between two large boulders placed hereabouts during construction of Lookout Mountain Rd.. Most likely other houses in vicinity were also burned or taken down c1800-1900 when settlers arrived & began building their own homes around hereabouts rather then following general idea “take what you can get” given natural surroundings etc.– amount of destroyed homes currently unknown but certainly much higher than present! In early days post office established here about 1840; served mostly locals; used local stores&post office materials until discontinued about 1870 due mainly to lack of customers logging over mile long main roads thru town (& mail had to be sent wagons all day long via 4WDs.) mail stop probably 2 miles NE corner OF SPRING HILL RD., renamed PINE HILL POINT circa 1870 after Post Office’s new location–still serving local residents though no longer using main streets & postal service materials until discontinued days ago! Therefore he invested money into building what is now known as The Springs Hotel which opened its doors in 1922 .
