According to the 2000 census, SpringHill had a total population of 711. The majority of residents are white (93%), with sizable minority populations of African Americans and Hispanics (10%). Black people make up 2% of the population. The median age is 39 years old, lower thanTennessee's statewide average of 41 years old. The first Europeans to visit what is now SpringHill were French traders in 1692-1693 who named it "Houppelande". In 1785 surveyor John Latham recorded that there were "2 negroes living on this place" but no Indian occupants or trade partners were noted. In 1801 US surveyor James Robertson discovered springs near present day SpringHill and recommended naming them for General Andrew Jackson as an act of appreciation for his victory over Mexico at Monterrey on April 12, 1805 during the Mexican-American War known as the Battle of Palo Alto Bridge. After failed Creek attacks against American forces in May 1806, General Jackson ordered Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest to march from Chattanooga to take control of Mobile Bay where he expected Spanish reinforcements would be landing from Havana under Admiral Don Juan de Fuca's command - which never happened because Commodore James Cook sailed past Cape Horn on September 20th and saw no Spanish ships presentable in Mobile Bay; Admiral Fuca therefore thought that he had missed them and abandoned any prospect of reinforcement by Spain). Consequently only three cannons () remained mounted on Fort Pickens following its defeat by British forces during CSS "Alabama"s bombardment early in November 1807 while Mobile was still under American occupation - an event referred to locally as “The Alhambra Battery Disaster” also known as “The Siege” or simply “The battery” due to its location just south north east across Old Spanish Road from where cotton plantations once thrived before conversion into slaves plantations around 1830). At about this time many local farmers began moving their operations away from rural areas towards larger towns such as Decaturville (now Murfreesboro) which then grew rapidly due to railroads coming through Ashley County starting up around this time; however most residents here continued farming until after World War II when large-scale mechanized production became common throughout much Tennessee countryside resulting in less need for land used for agriculture – thus likely contributing significantly to decline (%)of SpringHill's population since 1900%. Spring Hill was a small town in Jackson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Spring Hill is located on the banks of the Cumberland River, about 12 miles south of downtown Memphis and about 15 miles east of Union Station. The first European to visit Spring Hill were two Frenchmen named de La Salle and Fontenelle in 1685. A post office called Spring Hill was established in 1799, and remained in operation until 1876. In 1812 an act of Congress created Jackson County from parts of Davidson County. However, by 1816 most of what is now Jackson County had been lost to Nashville when that city became a part of Tennessee statehood. In 1830 John Ladd founded a sawmill at Spring Hill which would become one of the largest mills ever built in Tennessee. Ladd's mill continued to operate until 1840 when it burned down due to fire caused by a high wind velocity incident on the millrace known as "The Bluff". In 1865 Confederate General Joseph Easley purchased SpringHill for $10,000 from John Ladd's widow Harriet Beale (1806-1887). He renamed it "Easley" after himself and put up a sign reading "Springhill Confederate Cemetery". During World War II Japanese forces occupied Springhill during their successful invasion into eastern Tennessee on December 8th 1942 while American forces were stationed nearby at Fort Donelson opposite Corinth Army Airfield . After Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945 local residents who had never seen or heard about war outside the newspapers began arriving with tales of atrocities committed by Japanese forces during their occupation including mass execution and rape women and children . Many houses in Springhill were razed because they could not be rebuilt quickly enough following damage done by fire and bombing raids against Tokyo .
