Spring Hill is a small town located in Sullivan County, Tennessee. The population was 2,834 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Meesfield metropolitan area. Spring Hill is known for its colorful quilts, annual cherry blossom festival, and annual art show. The first settlers in what is now Spring Hill were farmers who arrived in 1796 from Virginia. They named their new settlement after springHill on nearby Mount Pleasant Mountain. Springs were plentiful here so they built reservoirs to cool off during summertime and used them ascollection points for water runoff from the surrounding mountainsides. The post office was established in 1821 and served the community until it closed in 1907. By then, most of the settlers had moved away or died out by that time. In 1865, General Edmund Kirby Smith led an army against Confederate General Robert Ewell during the Battle of Chickamauga Ridge and lost many men including several officers including Captain John Pemberton who later became governor of Tennessee and a Ulysses S Grant confidant In 1924, Major Hance Ladd purchased land near Spring Hill from Samuel Tilden II for $2,000 dollars which he planned to turn into a rural community with schools, churches, a cotton gin and other associated amenities Ladd's plan never came to fruition but his donation did lead to the creation of Spring Hill Country Club which still exists today as one of Chattanooga's largest golf courses In 1940-1941 local artist Harry Fowler exhibited his work "Springhill" at Sam Goodrich's Gallery located inside the first African American store west of Harlem New York City .
