The first known inhabitants of Spring Hill were the Creek Indians. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend occurred on July 16, 1814 when Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg attacked Union troops under General James K. Polk at Horseshoe Bend in central Johnson County. On July 21st Union forces again encountered Confederate forces at Greeneville Road Bridge over the Cumberland River; this battle resulted in a Union victory and ended Confederate control over eastern Johnson County. In 1827 John Sevier purchased land in what is now SpringHill from state representatives John Prentice and James Smith for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $ ). Sevier named his new community "SpringHill" after then–President James Kenedy's home Virginia (now Arlington Heights). He hoped to create a fashionable township with good schools that would attract gentleman farmers from surrounding counties to buy land thereabouts instead of moving to larger settlements such as Chattanooga or Knoxville. By 1830 about 50 people lived in SpringHill – many were employed by Sevier as farm hands or live stock owners/breeders/poultry dealers. A school was built on what is now Elm Street in 1830 and remained open until 1971 when it closed due to budget cuts by the Knoxville City School Districts effective January 1, 1972. A post office was established at SpringHill on November 3rd, 1830; it closed six years later on October 25th because mail service through Knoxville had been discontinued due to war efforts within the United States (the War Between The States). A store opened at Springhill along what is now Elm Street in 1835 which operated until 1861 when it burned down due to fire caused by chickens being housed inside while humans walked outside without protection against fires started by either animals or children playing outside. A three-story frame school building was erected on Depot Avenue southeast of Market Square between 1840-1841; this building became known as "Old High School".
