John “Pete” Schermerhorn designed and built the first rifle in town, which he named the “Spring Hill Rifle.” The rifle was used by Confederate sharpshooters during the Battle of Chickamauga and other skirmishes in central Tennessee. After the war, many residents of Spring Hill began to make bullets with their own hands and soon enough, bullets were being manufactured in Spring Hill as well. Bullet production continued until around 1870 when large-scale production moved to Sheffield, England due to increased demand for firearms throughout Europe.
