Ammunition history in Spring Hill, Tennessee began with the founding of the city by General John Sevier in 1796. The town's first store was established on Cumberland Street and soon became a center for manufacturing munitions. Ammunition production continued to grow throughout the 19th century and during World War I, Spring Hill contributed millions of rounds to the war effort. In 1938, the springhill Armory was founded and quickly became one of the most well-known gun manufacturers in America. Today, ammunition production is still a major factor in Springs Hills economy. The early days of ammunition production were difficult times forSpring Hill as demand for munitions grew rapidly from both sides of the Civil War. One reason for this difficulty was that cannonballs were not yet invented which made them necessary for firing projectiles more than 20 feet wide or longer. However, thanks to some creativity and innovation within Confederate artillery companies, guns were able to fire projectiles up to 100 miles away using crudely fashioned shot cannons called “shotguns” instead of larger cannons known as “mortars” used by Union forces. In 1868, Congress passed legislation authorizing an organization known as Bureau of Mines (BoM) which would develop mineral resources within states bordering Texas. As a result, BoM developed regulations governing mines and other explosives industries which led to increased ammunition production in Tennessee throughout the 1870s and 1880s*. By 1885*, Spring Hill had become world-renowned for its manufacture of precision firearms* due primarily to its ongoing development of new technology related to muzzleloading artillery shells (* See "History Of Ammo Production" For More Details). During World War II*, ammunition production at SpringHillArmory increased significantly due to wartime needs such as supplying proximity fuse incendiary bombs with tracer rounds while also producing TOW missiles* along with sniper rifles* specifically designed for taking down enemy bunkers from long distances.* Consequently, over 1 million rounds were produced at SpringHill Armory during World War II** – making it one of America’s leading weapons producers! *See " History Of Ammo Production" For More Details * According To Company Records: "From 1885 until 1918 we manufactured 576 types [of firearms] including pistols; revolvers; shotguns; rifles; machine guns including aircraft spotting weapons... Spring Hill is a town in Hardeman County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,980 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first settler in Spring Hill was John Crouch in 1828. He and his wife named their home "Springhill." The name stuck and the town grew around it until it had a population of 2,500 by 1860. In 1890, Spring Hill became an incorporated municipality with a population of 12,500. In the early 1800s there were no towns in Hardeman County other than Greeneville and Lebanon. When James Robertson founded Greeneville he named it after himself because he thought people would find it easier to recognize if there were two similar settlements within easy reach of one another. Robertson's idea worked and by 1819 SpringHill had been established as a small village with about 100 residents scattered among several log cabins near the banks of the White River (now called Old Hickory Boulevard). Robertson built what is today called SpringHill on land that his father had purchased from Andrew Johnson for $150 cash in 1817 while Johnson was President of the United States. When James Robertson died young in 1853 his heirs sold most of their holdings to General Wm Hogg who then donated them to the state government as part of Hardeman County courthouse Square donation program which also included many other notable Hardeman county families including Judge John Lathan and Drury Bros.. In 1889 SpringHill became an incorporated municipality with a population of 12,500 when Memphis annexed it into its city limits
