Spring Hill, Tennessee is a town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Spring Hill is located on the banks of the Cumberland River and has a long history as a center for cotton farming and shipping. The first permanent settler in what would become Spring Hill was James Coyle in 1784. He named his plantation "Creekwood" after one of his family's farms near present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1815 John Murray founded Murray Land Company with some others to purchase more than three million acres (10 km2) of land around Nashville from Native Americans for £10 per acre ($16 per km2). Murray planned to develop it into self-sufficient villages with churches, mills, schools and other infrastructure. However, he never completed his project because of financial difficulties. In 1824 Michael Love moved to Spring Hill from nearby Oxford and began purchasing large parcels of land east of the Cumberland River for development into what would become SpringHill Village – now known as Lower Town – while continuing to operate Oxford’s post office which served alluvial soils along most of its route until 1865 when it merged with that of Nashville under one system operated by two selectmen (now mayors). By 1840 Love had purchased additional tracts totaling , including much later annexed by Lower Town; this made him one of the largest landowners in Springhill Village before it became incorporated as a village on December 12, 1868 following passage by Tennessee General Assembly ceding townships eastward acquired at various sales during Reconstruction rather than reverting back to their original borders (see also article about spring hill violence)). Love was instrumental in ensuring that early residents learned how to cultivate cotton so that they could Export Mode production continued uninterrupted until well into World War II due primarily to his efforts since prices were still high enough relative to world market conditions then that sizable profits could be realized without leaving home ...
