There were also two churches - First Presbyterian Church (1868) and Second Presbyterian Church (1902). The cotton gin located near present-day Hardship Springs began operations around 1800 as part of an effort to improve agriculture in the area. By 1830, there were over 100 cotton gins operating in southeast Tennessee with improvements including: water tanks, steam engines, and ponds for catching moths and larvae that caused the growth of silkworms during this time period .
