Soddy Daisy is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, located about six miles east of the city of Memphis on the banks of the Cumberland River. The population was 2,007 at the 2000 census. Soddy Daisy is one of three towns in Knox County that were founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1800. The origins of Soddy Daisy are unknown, but it is thought that they named their community after a small stream called Sadie which they sighted while grazing their cows near their farmstead. The name likely comes from "sad" (a word meaning "sweet") because the stream's water was so refreshing and tadpoles could be found swimming among the rocks around its edges. Over time, asSadie gradually became known as Soddy Daisy, its natives began to refer to themselves simply as "Saddies." In 1814, James Dyer established his cotton gin at what is now Soddy Daisy and began producing large quantities of cotton for export. For many years this was one of the most important businesses in town - until it eventually closed down due to competition from larger mills closer to Memphis. In 1868, John Rankin opened his grocery store in Soddy Daisy and soon became one of its leading proprietors.Rankin would later serve as mayor and as a member of both houses of the Knox County General Assembly from 1903-1907; he also served two terms as Governor of Tennessee (1912-1916). Rankin would be buried at Springdale Cemetery in Soddy Daisy. In 1916 Lewis Auchincloss purchased portions of Rankin's grocery store and built an imposing four story brick building which still stands today - home to several stores including Weis Markets Inc., BET intensity Technologies LLC., FedEx Ground Inc., JBL Enterprises LP., Aiken Machine Shop LP., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Allied Signal Corporation - all prior thereto tenant companies within Millington Mall across I-25 from original Rankin building site). At first glance it may look like just another commercial center typical throughout much if not all rural America during World War II era when such buildings were popular tourist attractions with lots OF parking! But upon examination you can see how this unique structure functioned more importantly for a single entity:Lewis Auchincloss Tobacco Company! This building represented significant change for Soddy Daisy since tobacco had long been an agricultural product grown primarily on family farms outside town limits where transportation costs often made bringing these products into town prohibitively expensive or impossible--Auchincloss solved this problem by locating his company inside Millington Mall itself! And boy did he do well too! From 1942 through 1945 Auchinclous total sales amounted to $50 million!!! By 1945 TCI/ABC Own Stations had retrenched most local media operations nationwide & network programming was reallocated within Washington D C TV market area creating opportunity for locally owned station here at home!! So profitable indeed that it paid off handsomely for Lewis Auchincloss who sold cigarettes nationally on WSM radio beforemoving operations back inside his old Storeroom door!) In fact if there ever was any doubt whether SMG’s quality control processes were sound then THAT’S WHY ALL OF THE LINES ON YOUR RADIO ARE LIGHTNING STRUCK)
