However, due to its location and strong gun tradition, Soddy Daisy quickly became one of the most important gun-owning communities in Tennessee. The first guns were brought over from Kentucky by settlers in the early 1800s. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson moved his army into western Tennessee to take on British forces. When he arrived in Nashville, he ordered all riflemen to arm themselves with pistols instead of rifles. This gave local farmers and militiamen an advantage against the British troops. The town of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee was founded in 1836 by two brothers, James and John Soddy. The town was named for Charles Fenton, the first white settler in the area. In 1853, the town had a population of just 10 people. By 1865, it had grown to over 100 people. The town was renamed Memphis after the American Civil War victory there. The population of Soddy Daisy fell to just 25 people by 1930. However, it has since grown again (especially due to new development in the area) and now has a population of over 300 residents.

The name Soddy Daisy comes from the nearby creek and daisy flower naming convention which places a namesake daisy in every river mile that has a population over 500. Soddy Daisy was founded by Methodist Episcopal missionaries who left Independence, Missouri in 1847 to found what would become Ford County. They named their new community after Daisy Miller (1786-1860), one of their number and an early settler in this area. The first post office was established at Soddy Daisy on October 12, 1851, and it operated until December 15, 1866 when it was moved to its present location downstream of Gatlinburg. In 1889, the local school district opened up its own high school which continues to be open today as Soddy Daisy High School. In 1907-08 there were several major changes to the Ford County government with creation of the Trustees Court system and these have continued through various incarnations ever since including as current forms known today under state law (Tennessee Code Annotated). Today's downtown core remains largely unchanged from when Soddy Daisy first sprung up around 1800 with only some minor alterations - a grocery store/cafeteria opening up on Main Street in 1954 followed by another restaurant/grocery store on East Main Street following in 1957; both closed down circa 1995 when new development became available east of town along I-40 between Shelbyville Road and Exit 239B for workers commuting into Memphis or Nashville for work purposes; however two adjacent homes still stand (one currently used as office space) providing evidence that nothing really changed much within those walls during those years other than people stopped using them for commercial purposes...thus giving us our proverbial "rusty old infrastructure" moniker!

Soddy Daisy was named for David Soddy, an Englishman who settled there in 1868. Soddy Daisy is part of the Memphis metropolitan area and was once served by two daily newspapers: The Shelbyville Daily Sentinel and The Jackson Journal- Enterprise. Today only one paper operates in Soddy Daisy: the local weekly, The Pilot News. The village of Soddy Daisy briefly had its own television station in the early 1970s; however, it switched to WTVM (NBC) after three years due to low ratings. today WTVM is an affiliate of Fox Business Network. In 2003, a group of community members started a nonprofit organization called "The David Soddy Center for Rural Education" which provides scholarships and job training to rural high school students in Hardin County. In addition to giving back to their community through education and economic development opportunities, the center also helps promote responsible drinking practices among youth as well as provide environmental stewardship awareness programs throughout Hardin County.
